A bunch of people have been asking me how I placed the “Bright Lights Big City” track with Jim Jones. It was pretty easy actually. I Didn’t need a grand scheme or plan (which has worked for me before). I’ll try to make this sound as interesting as possible… but its really not. This is a straight forward example of how real networking pays off.

Super cool video bro lol.
It’s really nice we get a chance to see the making of that beat. When I heard it, I thought it was simple but it had a lot of details to it.
You know that Clappy Face sound, did you just stumble upon it while making the beat, or you heard it before and remembered it and when you started making the beat you went back to get it?
Also, i know it’s not a tutorial but making of one beat, but I think that is FL and I have no idea what is what on screen, so when the beat is playing I don’t know really what’s going on. Maybe you should’ve gave a quick explanation for those who don’t use FL. Althought, by the end I kinda figured it.
Also, how much time it took to make that beat from the moment you found the sample?
lol what is clappy face?
I’m probably going to put together some real basic FL Studio tutorials in the future. Look out for that.
I don’t really remember how long it took, but usually it takes me the good part of a day to finish a beat. Then I usually tweak it forever, till its sold.
And I found it just going through patches on the fantom.
Dope vid Jim! I think the good sir above was referring to the “clappy phase” sound, lol. But clappy face is MUCH more amusing……so we’ll stick with that.
Lol, clappy phase and clappy face kinda sounded the same to me lol.
I’ll never use FL (I’ve bashed it too much, gotta stick with what I said lol), but it looks cool to make sample based beats on it.
“I’ve bashed it too much”
Hmmmmmmm….
And it’s clavi phase for the record.
Yo FL almost made me quit beatmaking when I was like 14 (I’m 21). I thought it was the shittiest thing with the shittiest sound ever. But at the time I didn’t understand the concept of beatmaking software. Then I turned to Reason and it was as complicated, BUT it had amazing sound from the start so I stayed with it. But I could probably work with FL just fine now that I “get” beatmaking.
What’s cool is that you see the full 2 bars in the drum loop, in Reason you only see 1 bar at a time. But yo, you just gave me the idea of using the Reason Drum Machine for samples, it’s much easier. What I use to do is load the sample like and instrument and use the piano roll Thanks for that
FL Studio is such an underrated program. We use it & it works wonders for us. Most people use it for sample based songs but, it works great for original tracks too. Thanks for posting the video Jim.

What do you suggest for beefing up Kicks and snares.I use parametric equalizers and compressors..any other ideas?
The #1 thing is choosing the right sounds. Also look into parallel compression too… http://www.beabetterproducer.com/parallel-compression-with-mike-chav/
Arigato!
