The Break Down #2: Love – Doggone – by Frost Gamble

Some drumbreaks, like Impeach*  or Amen** , have been used on hundreds of records to the point where even the casual fan can recognize the original track.   Others, like Love’s Doggone, may have been used by far fewer producers – but still be every bit as sick.

Love was an influential psych rock band active in the late 60s / early 70s.   They experienced a small degree of commercial success, but inspired a number of successful bands yet to come.   By the time their 1969 album Out Here was released, their line up had changed completely, and their sound had evolved to a more experimental, wide-ranging sound.

This break seems to have gone mostly unnoticed for the 80s (collectors were mostly buying funk records?) and had a couple uses in the 90s – but when Kanye West picked it up and dusted it off, people took notice again.   Clocking in at 12 minutes long, Doggone features a 9 minute drum solo by George Suranovich that provides lots of sample opportunities:

Hurricane – Pass Me the Gun

This is one of the first uses, on 1995’s The Hurra.
Side Note #1: As the Beastie Boys long-time DJ, Hurricane must have had access to all kinds of sick breaks and rare records. *admits jealousy*
Side Note #2: I kinda enjoyed the Afros album.  Not sure why, but I did.  R.I.P. JMJ.

John Legend – Used to Love U
Co-produced by Kanye, off the 2004 album Get Lifted

P-Diddy – Everything I Love Ft. Nas & Cee-Lo
Off Press Play, produced by Kanye West.  ‘The-Breaks’ credits this as a chop of same record, I’m not 100% – but it’s definitely an ill beat.

Talib Kweli – Get By
Produced by……yep, Kanye West.  Hey, nobody else seems to be touching it!

The great thing about this break is that at 9 minutes, there’s so much to flip – every individual tom, kick and crash is worthy.  The more producers chop, flip and reinterpret a break, the more we elevate the art.  Stay diggin’….

  2. Tayo says:

The drum loop sounds like the same one Kanye used on Common’s The Corner and Mobb Deep’s song off Amerikka’s nightmare..Throw ya hands in da air which was produced by Mr West.
As for the Corner..The Temptations used the same loop on the original song//peep the breakbeat part

  3. Special K says:

The one for the Everything I Love is a different break.

  4. Antidote says:

Drum & Bass (and the roots of it back in the Hardcore/Jungle days) has rinsed this break out long before Kanye came along ;)

One of the better uses of it in the music.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRHolZpc_RU

    ..enjoy :)

  5. Carlski says:
