Here is a great article written by Motown mastering engineer Robert Dennis. He explains a technique called “The Exciting Compressor”, which was/is used to bring brightness out of vocals & instruments. Essentially it’s another take on parallel compression, with a twist. As always, I have tried out the tips & tricks I post on this blog and fully endorse them. Especially when they come from guys who have worked at Hitsville USA…

Motown developed a mixing method that allowed presence, bite and intensity on lead vocals. Even when the vocals were mixed at an even level with the music, you could hear every word clearly. I’ve released two past articles on this subject and every time I get bombarded with comments about how great the technique is.
