New Rules: #1 Don’t Ask To Send Music… JUST SEND IT!

The Be A Better Producer Blog’s “New Rules” lays out some basic rules that everyone should follow.  Simple and easy…

Rule: #1  Don’t Ask to send music… JUST SEND IT!

newrulesIf you are going to e-mail someone and ask if you can send them some music, don’t ask…  JUST SEND THE MUSIC.  Responding back with an email can take just as long as listening to a few of your beats/songs/limericks/etc.   So save whoever you are asking the time & just include the music from the start.  If they don’t want to listen to your music, or it’s too late for a beat submission or whatever, they won’t do it anyway.  If you are worried about being seen as rude by attaching music in the first e-mail, just add this to the end of your e-mail.

“I’ve attached some of my music if you do have the time.  Thank you”

If anyone is offended by that, they would probably be even more offended by you asking for a response to send music before you send it.

Review: SellMoreBeats.com – “Sell More Beats Online” Video Series

sell more beats

A few months ago I was in the process of setting up my first beat selling site, www.iLeaseBeats.com.  While researching the business of non exclusive beat selling, a friend of mine told me to check out a website called www.sellmorebeats.com.  I am the worlds greatest procrastinator (and skeptic), so naturally it took me about 4 months to finally check out the site.  After checking out the videos of the sellmorebeats series, I had to write up a review…

How To Place Beats: Small World

“How To Place Beats” aims to give valuable insight into the music industry through the telling of true stories of real beats being placed…

Chapter I – Small World

Five years ago, I was in negotiations for a 10 song production deal with an indie label.  At the time, I had not sold a beat for more than $150 and hadn’t worked with any known artists.  Needless to say, this deal was going to bring in a lot more money than that.   After working out the basic terms, I was eager to sign the dotted line.   Even though I got a lawyer to check out the paperwork when it came, I was so impatient, I decided to get some free legal advice online first.  I did a search for “Entertainment Lawyers” and anonymously instant messaged a random entertainment lawyer to see what he thought about the deal.

I talked to this guy about the deal for a bit then just started to BS with him.   Turns out he was in NY.  He  was also working as a consultant on an MC’s project.  Out of all the MC’s in the world this guy could have been working with… … Continue Reading

How To Place Beats: Networking to “Bright Lights Big City”

A bunch of people have been asking me how I placed the “Bright Lights Big City” track with Jim Jones. It was pretty easy actually. This is a straight forward example of how real networking pays off.
