Producer Psychology 101: Avoiding “Fu@# You Syndrome” & Taking Losses Like A Man! by Jim Bond

January 10, 2010 7 Comments

cash_birdHi.  My name is Jim.  I used to write for this blog way back in the day.  Since my last post*, I have found a new calling.  I am officially an internet marketing nerd.  My goal is figuring out how to make a modest amount of  money online in a completely passive manner.   I have been focusing ALL of my time toward it the last couple months…

What this nonsense has to do with Being A Better Producer…

I recently took my first big loss in internet marketing (read about it here).  While reflecting on it, it reminded me about the losses I took while trying to break into the music biz, how I reacted to them and how I see others react to their own losses.  So I decided to delve into the psychological aspects of success and failure in the music biz…

pros-and-cons

The last few weeks I’ve come across a few discussions online about whether or not you should tag your music when shopping it.  So I figured I’d throw in my two cents about the pros and cons of tagging your music & my general theories on it.  Here is a handy color coded guide for your reading pleasures… PRO & CON

For about 7 years,  I have used tags on my tracks.  Here is an example of how I do it.

New Rules: #1 Don’t Ask To Send Music… JUST SEND IT!

August 22, 2009 4 Comments
The Be A Better Producer Blog’s “New Rules” lays out some basic rules that everyone should follow.  Simple and easy…

Rule: #1  Don’t Ask to send music… JUST SEND IT!

newrulesIf you are going to e-mail someone and ask if you can send them some music, don’t ask…  JUST SEND THE MUSIC.  Responding back with an email can take just as long as listening to a few of your beats/songs/limericks/etc.   So save whoever you are asking the time & just include the music from the start.  If they don’t want to listen to your music, or it’s too late for a beat submission or whatever, they won’t do it anyway.  If you are worried about being seen as rude by attaching music in the first e-mail, just add this to the end of your e-mail.

“I’ve attached some of my music if you do have the time.  Thank you”

If anyone is offended by that, they would probably be even more offended by you asking for a response to send music before you send it.

Window Of Opportunity #1… G-Unit Beat Submission

July 11, 2009 11 Comments

g-unit_beat_submissionI’m going to be heading over to G-Unit (And probably an extra label or 2) some time next week.   I am taking beat submissions from all the Be A Better Producer Blog readers, to bring up there.  I have helped place another producer’s track w/ 50 Cent and placed one of my own tracks w/ Lloyd Banks.  So I do have a decent track record. As far as the music goes, I don’t want to hear any soft stuff.  Even if you have a club type joint, it better hit hard.   I see all of you are spread out all over the world, so lets find some new talent!  Update:  They need “uptempo BANGERS for 50’s next single – between 90 and 93 bpms. Still hood though!”

Review: PMPWorldwide.com ARS (Ad Revenue Sharing) Program…

April 13, 2009 2 Comments

There has been some talk in the producer circles online about PMPWorldwide.com’s new feature.  PMP worldwide has recently implemented a brand new ARS (Ad Revenue Sharing) program for their members.   Essentially, in return for driving visitors to your pmp profile page, you get a quarterly paypal “check”.  Since there is no real explanation of how the system works on the site, I figured I’d show you all how it looks from the member side of things (Courtesy of PMP’s comprehensive stat tracking)…

The ARS system works in tiers.  If you reach a certain tier, you get a specific payment…

My tier 2 ranking was based off of the amount of “Audience Points” I accumulated over the 1st quarter of this year.  “Audience points”

Why you shouldn’t talk trash in the music industry (and in general)…

March 21, 2009 3 Comments
no-talk2Don’t try to be cool with your shades. Be humble!

There is a phenomenon in the world of music production that makes no sense and should be completely eradicated.  For some reason, producers LOVE talking up their music.  They will email an mp3 and say “Guaranteed club SMASH!” or “Hov needs to hear this ASAP!”  In my short span as a beat picker, tracks that were introduced as such, have never even been keepers to me.  I don’t know if this is because the music really wasn’t up to my standards or if my expectation were just so high, they were doomed to be passed on.

Even if you tell someone “this is the greatest beat you will ever hear in your entire life”, and IT IS…  That still doesn’t help you at all.  If anything, it is going to set someones expectations high and you are just setting everyone up for disappointment.

On the other hand, you’d be surprised how often industry people will still underestimate you.  Even by the way you look.  I still can’t believe people are bugging out because they don’t expect the tracks I make, coming from a white guy… but they do. So the lesson of the day is be humble and let the music speak for itself.
