He explains a technique called “The Exciting Compressor”, which was/is used to bring brightness out of vocals & instruments. Essentially it’s another take on parallel compression, with a twist. Motown developed a mixing method that allowed presence, bite and intensity on lead vocals. Even when the vocals were mixed at an even level with the music, you could hear every word clearly. I’ve released two past articles on this subject and every time I get bombarded with comments about how great the technique is.
Mike Chav is back. This time dropping some knowledge on parallel compression on snares… I just tried the low pass/comped trick on the snare and it works spectacularly. This is definitely a great way to get a good drum sound going. Thanks for the knowledge Mike Chav!
